SCOTT FRANKLIN EVANS

HOLDFAST

“For whatever we lose

(like a you or a me),

It’s always ourself
we find in the sea.”

E.E. Cummings

I’ve always been drawn to the ocean. It excites me, calms me, it’s a place to think, it’s a place to meditate (not think). It also scares me how powerful it is. I started SCUBA diving when I was sixteen years old. Once I turned 18 (I had to wait for my bday while in training), I passed my Divemaster certification and began professional diving.

I find that almost anyone I speak to is drawn to the sea. In this project I explore that connection. I’m digging into my curiosity about it and how and why it affects me so strongly. What emotions surface when you return to the ocean? How can I connect this to my love for art photography?
